10 Days of Smiles in Malawi

A Life-Changing Cleft Journey Organized by Operation Smile Malawi

This November, we are taking a special 10 Days of Smiles surgical program to Malawi.

Welcoming 60 children born with cleft conditions and their families, we are determined to make something wonderful happen with your support — creating smiles and hope from November 6th to November 15th.

The children joining us are full of joy and imagination. They’re bright, they like blowing bubbles, drawing colourful chalk masterpieces and listening to stories that make them giggle. Just like any child, they dream big and play hard.

But living with a cleft condition can make everyday moments like these tough; from difficulty speaking to problems with bullying, challenges arise that can dim their light.

Your support changes that.

Since 2012, Operation Smile has delivered essential surgeries to over 3,230 patients in Malawi. And now, our 10 Days of Smiles surgical program can offer the same care.

It’s more than just cleft surgery — it’s a chance for hope, confidence and brand-new smiles.

Follow the Journey

We are excited to share previews of the journey ahead during every special moment in Malawi. From the waiting room to the surgical room, there’s lots that happens to make the work we do possible.

See what the journey looks like, day by day!

Day 1 – November 6th

As our surgical program in Malawi begins, we’re expecting 60 patients and their families to arrive at the facilities.

Travel costs can be a barrier between children and accessible cleft care — but because of YOU, we’re able to provide free transportation, housing and warm meals for all families attending, making them feel right at home.

Days 2 and 3 – November 7-8th

On this day, Operation Smile’s caring medical volunteers will conduct health evaluations to make sure each child is healthy enough for surgery.

Above all, we value the safety of our patients and always prioritize their wellbeing. That is why only those who are able to handle anesthesia and recovery will be chosen for surgery. This thorough process ensures every child gets the right care.

We carry our high standards of care into the third day — a day of team preparation and education where our dedicated volunteers are carefully trained and briefed. This helps us deliver the most compassionate and effective treatment possible as we continue reinforcing safety protocols.

Day 4 – November 9th

After a careful selection process, next comes the announcement day, a day full of mixed feelings.

Not every child will be able to move forward with surgery — and that’s one of the toughest parts of the process. But at Operation Smile, a patient’s health always comes first. If a child isn’t selected, we stay committed to keeping in touch to help them through comprehensive care, so they can receive surgery as soon as possible.

Of all the children who receive health evaluations, 40 patients are selected to undergo surgery. This is a time of both relief and anticipation for families whose children get to move forward in the process. As their child gets prepared for the procedure, our team answers all questions and ensures families receive important information about what to expect before and after the surgery.

Through YOUR generosity, we’re able to finalize every step needed to provide children with the highest standard of care.

Patient announcement days are full of emotion where families learn if their child will receive surgery.

Days 5 to 10 – November 10th to 13th

The moment we’ve all been waiting for — it’s time to create new smiles.

Thanks to your incredible support, families can place their trust in our compassionate medical team as the surgical procedures take place — and it takes as little as $240 and 45 minutes to deliver a new smile.

The reunion after surgery is one of immense joy and relief. Warm hugs are exchanged, and gratitude fills the room. It’s a completely unforgettable moment as parents see a brand-new smile on their child for the very first time.
