Arlet from Guatemala

Young girl wearing a brightly coloured shirt, holding a photo of younger self before cleft surgery, showing her bilateral cleft lip.
Arlet holds a photo of herself before her bilateral cleft lip surgery to show her transformation.

Arlet’s sweet eyes are almost as bright as her new smile. With a bi-lateral cleft lip (an opening on both sides of the upper lip), her transformation has her breathing, eating, drinking, and smiling so much easier! Her new picture melted our hearts – and continues to be the background on many of our computers at Operation Smile Canada!

This picture of Nazifa represents what cleft surgery and comprehensive care like speech therapy, psychosocial support, and oral health represent: opportunity! Here, Nazifa is joyfully on her way to school, where she can learn without being bullied for looking different and communicate more clearly than before. She has been in our care since 2010!

It was hard to choose just one picture from Christopher’s journey, but the moment we received this “first look” after surgery from a follow-up visit, we were thrilled to see his incredible transformation! This photo truly captures the essence of his spirit. Despite being born into adversity, Christopher is filled with joy and has an infectious laugh.

Ihan and Karla from Colombia

There’s almost nothing as special – even sacred – at Operation Smile as witnessing a parent’s first moment seeing their child after cleft surgery. It’s usually filled with a rush of emotions: joy, relief, hope, and gratitude. This photo of Ihan’s mother, Karla, sweetly embracing her precious son is a reminder of the life-changing power of every donation – not just for a child born with a cleft condition, but for the entire family who carries the weight of their future.

Valentine from Rwanda

Valentine from Rwanda shows us her beautiful smile.
Valentine from Rwanda shows us her beautiful smile.

Many of the pictures we have of Valentine before she had cleft surgery are difficult to look at – not because of her differences, but because of the sadness in her big, beautiful eyes. At 5 years old, she was still living with an untreated cleft lip and the children in her village wouldn’t play with her. She was bullied, ignored, and forgotten. Fast forward to life after surgery, Valentine cannot help but smile ear to ear! The photos we have now are full of joy and friends. We are so thankful to our partners who completely changed Valentine’s life!
